The Saptarishis are the seven great sages created by Brahma to guide humanity, preserve dharma, and maintain cosmic order. They are regarded as the mind-born sons of Brahma and are revered across Vishnu Purāṇa, Bhagavata Purāṇa, and other Hindu scriptures. Their spiritual courage and wisdom played a crucial role in shaping human civilization and moral conduct during Satya and Treta Yuga.


The Saptarishis were tasked by Brahma to guide humanity and uphold dharma. Each sage specialized in spiritual knowledge, meditation, and the performance of tapasya. They provided guidance to kings, rulers, and common people, helping them lead virtuous lives.

  1. Marichi: Known as the father of many sages and celestial beings; exemplified cosmic wisdom.
  2. Pulastya: Ancestor of the lineage of demons and sages; teacher of Narada Muni.
  3. Pulaha: Established hermitages and guided humans in spiritual practices.
  4. Kratu: Known for penance, spiritual rituals, and teaching dharma to mankind.
  5. Vashistha: Royal priest, sage of kings, known for his wisdom and legendary cow Kamadhenu.
  6. Angiras: Teacher of Vedic hymns; performed deep austerities for universal welfare.
  7. Atri: Sage of great knowledge and spiritual power; father of sages and divine beings.
