Prithu Maharaja, the son of King Vena, is revered as the first proper king of mankind and the “Father of Agriculture.” According to Vishnu Purāṇa, he brought prosperity to the earth, established laws, and ensured the welfare of his subjects. His life is an exemplary model of dharmic leadership and bravery.
Prithu was born to King Vena, whose misrule brought suffering to the people. After Vena’s death, the sages performed rituals that allowed Prithu to ascend the throne. Observing that the earth (Prithvi) was barren and uncooperative due to mankind’s sins, Prithu chased her in the form of a cow and compelled her to yield crops, seeds, and sustenance for humanity.
He divided the kingdom into regions, established laws, and instructed his subjects in righteous living. His rule was marked by fairness, protection of dharma, and the welfare of all living beings. Prithu is also credited with starting organized agriculture, forestry, and trade systems.
