Biography

Early Life and Education

Jawaharlal Nehru was born into a wealthy and influential Kashmiri Brahmin family. His father, Motilal Nehru, was a prominent lawyer and nationalist leader. Nehru was educated in India and abroad—he attended Harrow School in England and later studied natural sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge. He also trained as a barrister at the Inner Temple, London.

Role in India’s Freedom Struggle

Nehru became deeply involved in the Indian independence movement under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi. He emerged as a leading figure in the Indian National Congress, advocating for complete independence from British rule. He was imprisoned several times by the British for his activism.

Prime Minister of India

After India gained independence on August 15, 1947, Nehru became the nation’s first Prime Minister. He played a crucial role in shaping India’s political and economic policies. He championed secularism, democracy, and scientific advancement. His vision emphasized industrialization, education, and foreign policy rooted in non-alignment during the Cold War.
